I have been in contact with two people from outside the U.S., One is from Haiti name Sandra and she is very informative and seems excited to talk with another person interested in the early childhood field. I also am speaking with Cintia from Brazil.
Sandra has offered me information about the hardships that the Haitian people face everyday. A lot of the information provided by her has been what we have already heard in the news. Her experience has been that most of the people she works with live in poverty as well as the people they serve. She said that there are not many programs in place that provide assistance to those in need. She said that compared to the pictures she has seen of the U.S. that her whole country is in poverty. I assured her that if all she has seen is prosperity and riches, that that is not all that America is. Our poverty is just as bad as others but being a nation that prides itself on being powerful those images are rarely seen to the outsiders. I asked her if there are any people in her country that are advocates for trying to get help for those who truly need it, she answered by simply saying no.
Cinita from Brazil is a sweet woman. She has actually called me and I have spoke with her. Her English is very good. She told me that in Brazil she has seen much poverty compared to America, (she has lived in America for a brief stint). She said that her early childhood centers do not have the abilities to provide all the things that we have in America. Cintia said that in the center she works in that there are many people of different origins, some wealthy, some poor, and some homeless. She also said that the programs that are in place in Brazil are from the government and are only available to a small few. The government does not provide like the American government. She said that she noticed while in the U.S. that what we consider to be poverty is life in Brazil. They do not consider living with multiple families under one roof, poverty, they will share everything they can in her country. She loves the sense of community that she sees in her country.
All in all I can see that even though we have poverty in the U.S. that we do not understand the half of what real poverty is. We see that people who have a two bedroom apartment and three families living there are poor, but what we don't realized is that this maybe the way they live where they are from. The American dream, as everyone calls it, is just that, the American dream. As Americans we do not have the sense of community and the comrodery that other countries do. We are all about each man for himself. It's about who can out-do who. This to me makes me sad and shows me that we are truly a spoiled nation and selfish as well.
Wow, I can see why families from other countries are 'flocking' to America. While, Americans may think education is devalued, many people from other countries value education and want their children to receive the best. Great post, I enjoyed it immensely!
ReplyDeleteTiffany,
DeleteAmerica is not all glitz and glamor for sure. The news media really doesn't snow much of that unless a disaster comes through like Katrina or the tornadoes. I am glad you have made contacts. I have made some but I have gotten a couple of very rude responses. One in fact said I needed to do the research on the questions I was asking. It's not easy speaking with some people as I thought it would be. I was polite however and said I would try and give more precise questions next time. Poverty as we have seen this week and probably if we stop to thing have known is growing throughout the world. America's financial state is really troubled and few people elsewhere would know that if they weren't in business. Not to mention look at our gas prices. If we can't afford gas we can't go to work. Yes there are many countries where even extended family live with the immediate family. I do understand this but the houses are not exactly the same as it is here. It just a different way of life and sometimes it's hard for us to see things outside of our norm. I like you statement on it's the "American" dream. That's very true and some people are losing sight of that slowly but surely. It's ever changing.

Great Post!! I think it is great that you have had success in communicating with someone outside of the US and I wish you the best with that throughout the rest of the course. I find it crazy that people in other countries can in many ways only view the US as a place of fortune and opportunity. In my opinion, this is because the news and media make it out to be that way and celebrities don't help that much either. The US just like many other countries are suffering through poverty and struggling to find ways to fix it.
ReplyDeleteI am so happy that you had two people respond to you. I am going to have to try again. I like how you told her that some of our issues of poverty are not seen in the news. You're right in that. For instance, they would rather just scoop up all of our homeless and hide them because it is not good for tourism.
ReplyDeleteI am also happy that you have been able to make contact, and I would love to know how you were able to find the individuals so that I might be able to find some, because all of my efforts have not worked, but I am listening to Podcast etc. I think that U.S is definitely in a state of crisis and that we experience poverty, but I do not believe that it is on the same level as those over in third world countries. I do believe that there are similar cases her in the U.S, some so awful that they claim the lives of children and family, but it is heart breaking when you go overseas, and communities after communities are in total poverty, so much to the point that even a drink of clean water is not a promise. I wonder how those countries would function here, and whether they would take some of our worse conditions and be thankful for that, versus our perception of the grim glimpse of poverty in the U.S? We are blessed here, even though things are so bad, because life could be even worse. You are doing a great job, and I truly enjoyed your blog.
